법률비서 영문이메일 연구: 코퍼스와 장르분석을 통하여

이메일은 가장 빈번하게 이루어지는 비즈니스 커뮤니케이션 방식이지만, 실제로 작성된 이메일을 수집하고 분석한 연구는 매우 드물게 이루어지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 법률비서가 작성하는 영문이메일의 특성을 살펴보고자, 서울 소재 로펌에 근무 중인 법률비서 50인을 대상으로 업무상 작성한 영문이메일을 수집하였다. 이메일 날짜, 작성자명, 회사명 등 기밀사항이 나타나지 않도록 사전처리된 총 334편의 이메일 텍스트로 코퍼스를 구축하여 2단계로 분석을 진행하였다. 1단계로 코퍼스 소프트웨어 AntConc (버전 3.4.3)를 이용하여 워드리스트와 엔그램 분석을 통해 빈출 어휘와 빈출 어휘구 목록을 추출하여 법률비서가 영문이메일에서 빈번하게 사용하는 어휘를 파악하였다. 2단계로 Ms Excel (버전 2010)을 사용하여 수집된 영문이메일의 대상, 작성목적, 가장 빈번하게 작성되는 장르의 무브를 분석하였다. 분석결과, 법률비서가 가장 빈번하게 이메일을 쓰는 대상은 로펌 외부 대상으로 고객, 내부 대상으로 외국인 변호사임을 알 수 있었다. 영문이메일 작성목적에 따라 안내, 요청, 문의, 답변 등으로 장르를 구분하여 빈도를 파악해 본 결과, 법률비서가 가장 빈번하게 작성하는 이메일 장르는 안내 이메일이며, 무브분석 결과, 안내 이메일은 도입-전반적 안내-구체적 안내-부가적 설명-맺음말 순으로 무브가 이루어짐을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구결과 파악된 법률비서 영문이메일의 대상, 장르, 무브에 대한 이해, 그리고 이메일 작성 시 빈번하게 사용되는 어휘리스트 및 어휘구 목록이 법률비서를 지망하는 학생들이나 신입비서 영어교육에 활용되기를 기대한다.
Abstract
A corpus analysis of the English emails written by 50 legal assistants was conducted in two stages. In the first stage, the corpus software AntConc (version 3.4.3) was used to extract the frequently used word list and to perform n-gram analysis. In the second stage, Ms Excel (version 2010) was used for genre analysis and move analysis. Through careful reading and re-reading, the data were content analyzed to categorize the recipients and the purposes. The emails were categorized into four major genres- Providing Information, Making Requests, Making Inquiries, and Replies- based on the purpose of email writing. Move analysis was then performed to find the typical moves of the most frequently used email genre by the legal assistants, Providing Information. The typical move pattern of Providing Information was found to be introduction – providing general information - providing detailed information – adding additional explanation – closing. The results of this study are expected to provide basic yet useful information on legal assistants’ English emails and to stimulate further studies for improving the English email communication skills of legal assistants.
