A Study on the Reporting Verbs in the Academic Texts -Based on the I-M-R-D Academic Texts about Korean Language Education

The purpose of this study is to analyze and describe the function and the writer’s stance of the reporting verbs based on the academic texts about the Korean Language Education. The total reporting verbs were in the order of FIND verbs(39.2%)> ARGUE verbs(36.4%)> SHOW verbs(17.9%)> THINK verbs(6.5%). As a result of examining the reporting verbs by the text structure of I-M-R-D, the most diverse types of reporting verbs were used in <Introduction> and the frequency of reporting verbs was also high. On the other hand, in <Discussion and Conclusion>, two kinds of reporting verb appeared three times. This is closely related to the function of the <Introduction>. <Introduction> presents the related research trends, previous research terms and concepts, research results, etc., and builds ups the related knowledge. In this case, various reporting verbs are used. In <Discussion and Conclusion, it seems that one reporting verb has been used because it summarizes the research and reveal the writer’s stance And it is identified that the writer’s stance is related to the usage of these reporting verbs, in other words, writers can vary their commitment to the message. They employ reporting verbs as representing the message as factive or non-factive, given no clear signal, as positive or negative. They select reporting verbs according to how much they load the information in that and how much sure they are about the massage.
