As the needs of consumer safety for fresh agricultural products have increased in recent years, improvement of logistics service has became an urgent issue. Compare to logistics of industrial goods, fresh logistics is far underdeveloped. Thus, research on advancement and development plan is needed. In this background, the purpose of this study is to suggest some strategies for development of storage and shipping industry which is the core of the fresh logistics process. Before presenting the strategies, unique distribution characteristics and difficulty in quality control of fresh agricultural products were examined. At the same time, the effects of low temperature management, and the trade-off relationship between quality management and cost of food logistics were analyzed. Social responsibility and need for food safety were also discussed. As part of the study, storage requirements of cold chain logistics center was established to fulfil the social responsibility of food safety. Hygienic qualification which the transportation industry must adhere to was reviewed. To my knowledge, this is the first national study about the issue. The study was conducted by collecting and reviewing literature and statistical data which are related to cold chain storage and techniques, and analyzing the status of domestic distribution industry and R&D technology. Through this study, the desirable direction for development of fresh logistics of fruits and vegetables was debated. In the future, it is essential to develop a standard Agrifood cold-chain shipping guideline and a standard operating requirements for the safety of agricultural products considering the characteristics of each item. This study is expected to be useful for setting the criterion.
