An Exploratory Study on the Determinants of BAM’s Sustainability Performance

Business as Mission(BAM) was used by different churches from developed countries to extend their help to the poor community from a developing country. Today churches from different countries are involved in the mission combined with business this activities of the church and business group that demonstrate visible support to the society. Pastors, missionaries, and business man uses BAM as their platform to reach out to the less evangelize and poor community. This practitioners classified themselves as BAMers or BAM practitioners they provide opportunity of growth in spirituality and economically. The rapid transition and changes on BAM’s concepts emerge however, prior research mainly focused with the paradigm, impact, effectiveness of BAM. The objective of this study is to attempt to probe BAM’s sustainability performance. Especially, this study will probe the determinants of BAM’s sustainability performance using the Quadruple Bottom Line Model (Economic, Environmental, Social, and Spiritual) factors. A study was conducted to target communities, and churches in South Korea that use BAM as their platform to extend their hand to those who are in need of economic and spiritual development. Earlier studies focuses mainly about BAM process and performance, this study contributes to the literature by providing proof and information that lead to success of BAM sustainable development. In conclusion, the current BAM sustainability stage are still at an early stage, it is necessary to probe what are the practical actions that BAM practitioners needs to priorities. Further studies will be needed to perform considering more external variables and moderator in order to provide a more complex BAM sustainability performance research.
