정관일선의 사상과 그 시적 형상화의 의미

이 논문은 정관일선(靜觀一禪, 1533∼1608)의 사상의 특징과 그 시적 형상화의 의미를 살펴보는 데 그 목적이 있다. 선교겸수(禪敎兼修)를 했던 정관은 사명유정 · 편양언기 · 소요태능과 함께 ‘서산 4대 문파’의 맏형으로, 일생 동안 산문을 중심으로 구도와 깨달음, 이를 통한 중생교화 등에 몰두하였다. 특히 마음이 일체의 근원임을 내세우며 사물을 있는 그대로 보고 관조하며, 탈속 무애한 무심의 경지를 시적으로 잘 담아내고 있다. 그의 이러한 시들은 구도와 점수(漸修)의 과정을 담은 시, 자연과의 친화적 교감에서 느끼는 한가함과 무욕의 서정이 함축된 시적 미학을 보여준다. 결국 그의 이러한 자연과 동화되는 무심의 세계는 선적 직관과 시적 상상력의 산물이라 할 수 있다. 아울러 여기에는 방하착(放下着)의 걸림이 없는 삶의 관조의 세계가 선명하게 드러나 있다. 따라서 이 글에서는 정관의 삼문수학(三門修學)의 사상과 이를 바탕으로 마음을 비우고 자신을 관조하며 깨달음과 무심합도(無心合道)에서 배태되고 창작된 시편들을 ‘색심불이(色心不二)’의 관점에서 살펴보았다. 그의 이러한 선심(禪心)의 시심화(詩心化)는 집착과 번다함으로 살아가는 현대인들에게 치유의 메시지를 전하고 있다.
Abstract
The aim of this paper is to examine the features of Seon thought and poetic aesthetics of master Jeonggwan Ilseon(1533∼1608). Succeeding the thought of Hyujeong's 'Seon and the Doctrinal Schools are not different but the same one,' Jeonggwan also practiced Seon and the Doctrinal Schools. Above all, he asserted that mind is the basis of everything. Among Seosan’s four factions(Jeonggwan Ilseon, Samyeong Yujeong, Pyeonyang Eongi, Soyo Taeneung, etc.), Jeonggwan's fraction most flourished after Hyujeong. During the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592, he stressed that the internal cleanup and harmony of the Sangha, while protecting mountain temples instead of participating into the war and also tried to calm the mass in pain and the spirits of the deceased by performing various rituals. Even though he performed both Seon and the Doctrinal Schools, he accepted three gates to enlightenment: Seon, doctrine, and chanting. In this context, the feature of Jeonggwan's thought is the succession of three gates to enlightenment. Basing on these practical expedients, Jeonggwan tried to find the original face, Buddha nature. The point is that he expressed vividly the course of truth-seeking and attaining enlightenment, communion with nature, and guidance of his disciples and the mass in more simple and condensed poetic images and dictions. Hence, the feature of Jeonggwan's poetic formation is the very beautiful product of Seonistic intuition and poetic imagination. In particular, originated and deepened in the practical course, Jeonggwan's poems include dharma fragrance to let attachment go and the fullness of emptiness. In a sense, reciting and appreciating Jeonggwan's simple and garbled poems can be a way to calm down our bubbly mind and to enjoy empty-mind. That's why the poetic description of Seon mind is the very Jeonggwan's poetic aesthetic of enlightenment and healing.
