초록
1950년대 포드자동차의 외부 혁신재원 활용을 위한 투자모델로 시작한 기업벤처캐피탈(CVC) 은 이후 지속적인 성장으로 벤처생태계 활성화를 위한 기술금융으로 자리 잡았다. 특히 기술의 유출 또는 지배적 관계에 따른 부정적 평가에도 불구하고, 자본 투입뿐 아니라 기업이 갖는 성장 경험과 전략 등의 전수(공유)를 통한 벤처 성장에 있어 최선의 파트너가 될 수 있으며, M&A의사결정도 시장관점에서 효율적으로 진행될 수 있다는 인식 확립은 CVC 성장의 주요 동력이라 할 수있다. 현 시점에서 CVC의 역할과 기능이 더 강조되고 중요한 이유는 4차 산업혁명으로 표현되는지능형 디지털 전환시대의 혁신환경 변화는 기술, 자본, 네트워크 자원을 모두 보유한 전략적 파트너에 대한 필요가 더욱 강해졌기 때문이다. 즉, 투자를 하는 기존 기업도 투자를 받는 신규 벤처기업도 상호 전략적 파트너로서 기능할 수 있는 CVC 모델이 중요한 시기이다. 이러한 관점에서본 연구는 글로벌 벤처투자 시장의 CVC 활동 현황을 확인하고, 이를 통해 CVC의 기능과 가치를이해하고자 한다. 또한 4차 산업혁명이라는 혁신환경의 변화 속에 국내 벤처생태계 활성화를 위한 CVC의 필요성에도 불구하고 CVC를 제한하는 원인과 이에 대한 정책적 시사점을 제시하고자 한다.
Abstract
Corporate Venture Capital (CVC) was started in the 1950s by Ford Motor Company as an investment model for external innovative ventures. It has continually evolved into a technology financing to foster a venture ecosystem. CVC has been criticized because of technological leakage and hierarchical relations; however, it has been valued as a stable partner for the ventures’ development by providing financial inputs and sharing its growth experience and strategy. At this point, CVC’s role and function are more emphasized because changes in the innovation environment in the era of intelligent digital transformation has expanded the need for strategic partners. It is critical to have a strategic partner with resources such as technology, capital and network. CVC model is essential for both investor enterprises and new ventures to work in a strategic partnership. This report aims to study CVC activities in global investment market for ventures and to understand its role and value. Furthermore, the study will explain the reasons for restricting CVC in South Korea despite of its good role in fostering Korean venture ecosystem and will suggest policy implications.
