1920년대 모스크바 공간에 대한 문학적 해석: 불가코프의 『조이카의 아파트』를 중심으로
A Literary Interpretation of Moscow’s Space in the 1920’s: Focusing on the “Zoika’s Apartment” by M.A. Bulgakov

본고는 불가코프의 희곡 『조이카의 아파트』에 등장하는 주인공 조야의 ‘집’, 더 정확히는 소비에트 네프시대 ‘코뮤날카’라는 공간의 문제와 그에 대한 불가코프의 문학적 해석을 살펴보고자 했다. 이미 선행연구에서 언급한 바와 같이 우리는 1920년대 모스크바 공간의 상징적 장소인 조야의 아파트가 잇따른 외부 세력의 침입과 훼손으로 주거 공간의 질서가 붕괴되고 일상이 위협을 받으며 ‘거주’가 상실되는 일련의 과정을 살펴볼 수 있었다. 불가코프의 희곡에서 집이 거주자를 지켜주는 공간이 아니라 자신의 존재조차 지킬 수 없는 공간이 되면서, 등장인물들은 그들이 처한 현실을 탈피하여 다른 공간으로의 ‘떠남’을 갈망하게 된다. 이런 의미에서 조야의 아파트가 그로테스크한 카니발 공연을 위한 무대로 변신하는 것은 자연스럽다. 이 무대에서 벌어지는 음란한 매음굴 공연이 곧 희곡의 중심 사건이 된다. 하지만 중세 민중 축제인 카니발 축제의 면모를 보여주는 이 공연의 준비 과정과 실제 공연에서 불가코프는 놀이, 가면, 익살스러운 인물들의 캐릭터를 통해 1920년대 모스크바 공간을 춤과 노래, 시끌벅적한 웃음소리로 가득 찬 희극적인 공간으로 재현해 낸다. 이처럼 불가코프가 공간 상실의 비극적인 공간인 네프 시대 소비에트 러시아인들의 주된 삶의 공간을 한바탕의 익살극이 벌어지는 희극적인 무대로 해석한 것은 시대를 살아내고자 했던 작가의 문학적 존재방식이었다고 생각해 볼 수 있다. 이는 이후 그의 마지막 소설 『거장과 마르가리타』에서 소설적 버전으로 재해석되면서 시대와 공간에 대한 총체적인 예술적 세계관으로 집대성된다.
Abstract
This paper tried to analyze the problem of the space in the main character Zoya's "Apartment" in M.A. Bulgakov's play "The Apartment of Zoika," and, more precisely, the literary interpretation of Bulgakov on it, in the era of Soviet New Economic Policy(NEP). As already mentioned in the preceding study, we were able to look at a series of processes in which Zoika’s apartment was destroyed by successive intrusion and mutilation of outside forces, resulting in the collapse of the order of living quarters, the threat of daily life, and the loss of "residence." In the play of Bulgakov, a ‘house’ becomes a place where it cannot protect its own people and even cannot protect its own existence, and the characters are driven away from the reality and aspire to 'leave' to another space. In this sense, it is natural for Zoya's apartment to transform itself into a stage for a grotesque carnival performance. The obscene performance of the cemeteries on this stage becomes the central event of the play. And Bulgakov reproduces 1920’s Moscow space into a musical comedy. The interpretation of the main space of life of the Soviet Russia as a comic stage in which a comic strip takes place, can be interpreted as the writer's literary way of trying to live through the times. It was later reinterpreted as a fictional version of his last novel "The Master and Margarita," which is a collective view of the artistic world of times and spaces.
