Isomorphic Pressure on Semi-institutionalization Stage and the Organizational Practice Adaptation Speed of Foreign Subsidiaries -MNE’s CSR Activity in China-

Firms do not respond in the same way, even if they are all affected equally in a given institutional environment. Despite that, there were not many previous studies that tried to explore at what point multinational enterprises would adopt organizational practices. The purpose of this study was to carry out an empirical analysis to find out the factors that influence MNEs’ subsidiaries’ adoption time and the duration of organizational practices in a sub-institutionalized phase. The subjects of analysis include 168 MNEs’ subsidiaries in 31 provinces and cities in China. The analysis period lasted from 2008 to 2016. The data for analysis was collected from the CSR indexes of the Research Center of Corporate Social Responsibility China Academy (CASSCSR), the Chinses company information of the QiChaMao (QCM), and province- and city-specific statistical data of the National Bureau of Statistics of China (NBSC). According to the analysis results, if the MNE’s subsidiaries had a wide adoption range and had higher adoption levels of practice in a semi-institutionalized phase, their adoption time of practice became faster. In addition, if the institutional pressure was higher and MNEs’ subsidiaries had a wider scope and higher levels of practice adoption, and if the establishment effect of private governance was larger, the practice duration lasted longer.
