초록
[연구목적]본 연구는 경영자의 보상 체계와 실제 이익조정 간의 관계를 분석한다. 구체적으로, 경영자의 초과보상 수준이 실제 영업활동을 통한 이익조정에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지에 대해 검증하고자 한다. [연구방법]연구목적을 수행하기 위해, 2003년부터 2015년까지 유가증권시장과 코스닥시장에 상장된 기업을 대상으로 실증분석을 실시하였다. [연구결과]분석 결과, 경영자의 초과보상과 실제 이익조정 간에는 통계적으로 유의한 음(－)의 관계가 나타남을 발견하였다. 이는, 경영자가 근거 없이 수령하는 초과보상이 클수록 위험을 감수해야 하는 실제 영업활동을 통한 이익조정 행위가 감소한다는 것으로 해석된다. [연구의 시사점]다수의 선행연구에 의하면, 경영자의 초과보상 수준은 경영자 보상 체계의 효과성을 나타내는 핵심지표 중 하나가 된다. 따라서, 경영자의 초과보상과 실제 이익조정 간의 유의한 음(－)의 관계는 실제 이익조정이 낮은 것이 경영자 보상 시스템이 효과적이지 못할 경우에 나타날 수 있다는 하나의 증거를 제공한다. 이와 같은 본 연구의 결과는 경영자의 실제 이익조정 수준이 낮다는 것이 반드시 긍정적인 요인으로 인한 결과물이 아닐 수도 있음을 확인했다는 점에서, 이해관계자들에게 기존연구와는 차별적인 시사점을 제공할 것으로 기대된다.
Abstract
[Purpose]This paper examines the association between CEO compensation scheme and real earnings management. Specifically, we investigate the effect of CEO’s excess compensation on earnings management through real operating activities. [Methodology]To perform the research objective, we choose to focus on KOSPI and KOSDAQ firms and collect data for fiscal years 2003－2015. [Findings]Our empirical result shows that the association between CEO’s excess compensation and real earnings management is significantly negative. This implies that manger’s real earnings management incentive which involves risk becomes less when he gets relatively higher amount of excess compensation. [Implications]According to many prior researches, CEO’s excess compensation is one of the core index which represents the effectiveness of CEO compensation scheme. Therefore, the significantly negative association between CEO’s excess compensation and real earnings management provides the evidence that less effective compensation contract induces less real earnings management. This demonstrates a fact that lower amount of real earnings management might be due to negative reason, giving related parties differential insight.
