This research deals with the optimal airline-ticket purchase problem in which the buyer should make a decision on whether or not to buy sequentially appearing airline-tickets in consideration of the appearing possibility of clearance (or promotion) leading to a given deadline. We formulate this problem as a mathematical model and prove the monotonic property of the optimal decision rules with respect to clearance ticket price. Specifically, we show how the double-critical value (DRV) property may lead to two optimal thresholds when the appearing probability of clearance tickets decreases relative to the remaining time nearing the deadline. In addition, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the model with empirical analysis by using real data and game experiments.
