A Study on the Price Change and Learning Curve of the Foundry Semiconductor Industry

This study analyzes the foundry business model and its relation with market environment and technology. The research model is used to measure the foundry semiconductor learning curve. The learning, scale, and spillover effects are analyzed by using 17 years of foundry semiconductor data from 2000 to 2016. We measure learning index based on the change in wafer sales price and the individual process node in the foundry semiconductor market. Empirical results show that the learning effect and the scale effect are statistically significant, but the spillover effect is statistically insignificant. Learning index, which represents the change of wafer price resulting from the accumulation of production experience, is secured by approximately 15%~25% competitiveness for the market’s leading company in all process nodes relative to the whole foundry semiconductor industry, except in the case of 130 nm and 20 nm.
