The Impact of the Level of Government Financial Subsidy on the Electric Vehicle Market Expansion and Electric Vehicle Manufacturers’ Performance

Several developed countries including South Korea have been providing fixed financial subsidy to electric vehicle consumers. To analyze the impact of government financial subsidy on the electric vehicle (EV) market expansion and competing EV manufacturers’ performance, a stylized game-theoretic model of the competition between two EV manufacturers is provided. As the fixed subsidy increases, the EV market size and the social welfare increase linearly; the market size and profit of the low-value EV manufacturer increases faster than those of the high-value one. As the low-value EV manufacturer improves its value to consumers, when the production cost difference is small, the high-value EV manufacturer’s market size may increase until the latter’s EV value reaches a certain threshold.
