초록
본 연구는 그래픽 디자인에서 기술이 ‘디자인 민주화’에 미친 영향과 미래 디자이너의 역할에 관한 문헌연구이다. 기술의 발전은 디자이너에게 창작의 가능성을 열어 준 동시에 모두가 디자인하는 ‘디자인 민주화’가 이루어졌다. 그동안 전문가 역할을 담당했던 디자이너의 역할에 큰 변화를 가져온 것이다. 본 연구의 목적은 전문 디자이너의 역할을 재정의해야 할 필요가 있다는 문제의식에서 출발하였다. 연구 방법은 디자인과 기술, 디자인민주화 키워드를 바탕으로 단행본, 학술·학위논문, 정기간행물, 온라인 자료 등을 바탕으로 문헌연구를 진행한후, 그래픽 디자인 관점에서 디자인 민주화에 대한 사례를 조사하였다. 그리고, 세계적으로 영향력 있는 디자인전문가의 최근 저서와 강연자료를 통해 디자인 패러다임 변화를 고찰한 후, 디자이너의 역할을 재정의 하였다. 연구결과, 기술이 발전함에 따라 디자이너가 ‘협력적으로 일할 수 있는 능력’은 필수적인 것이다. 앞으로 디자이너는 자신의 감각과 역량을 대중과 함께 소통을 통해 공유해야 하고, 다양한 사회구성원이 더 잘 디자인할 수있도록 도와주는 ‘퍼실리테이터’의 역할을 해야 한다. 또한, 디자이너는 과거 소수를 위한 디자인이 아닌, 기술및 데이터를 사용하여 수백만 또는 수십억 명의 사용자를 대상으로 만족시키는 ‘컴퓨팅 디자이너’의 역할이 요구되며, 사회가 직면한 다양한 문제를 해결하기 위해 ‘사회적 혁신’의 중심에 서야 한다. 모두가 디자인하는 시대, 미래 디자이너는 모두 다 할 줄 아는 ‘통합적 디자이너’의 역할이 필요하다는 것을 본 연구를 통해 확인할수 있었다.
Abstract
This paper presents literature study on the effects of technology on ‘democratization of design’ and the roles of future designers in graphic design. Technological development has opened new possibilities of creation for designers and, at the same time, led to ‘democratization of design’, which means that everyone can be a designer. There have been big changes to the roles of designers who have served as experts. The present study was conceived by the problematic consciousness that the roles of professional designers needed to be redefined. As for methodology, the investigator conducted literature research based on books, scientific treatises, dissertations, regular publications, and online materials with the keywords of design, technology, and democratization of design and examined democratization cases of design from the perspective of graphic design. In addition, changes to the design paradigms were examined based on the recent books and lecture materials of design professionals with global influence before the redefinition of designers’ roles. The findings show that the ‘ability of collaborative work’ became an essential requirement for designers due to the technological developments. In the future, designers should share their senses and capabilities with the public through communication and serve as ‘facilitators’ to help diverse members of the society do better design. They are also required to play their roles as ‘computational designers’ to satisfy millions or billions of users with technology and data instead of the old design for the privileged few and stand at the center of ‘social innovation’ to solve various issues faced by the society. These findings indicate that designers will need to play the roles of ‘integrated designers’ capable of doing everything in the future era when everyone can do design.
