The history of counterfeiting has just begun with the advent of currency. So, monetary system has been changed as security features against counterfeiting were developed. As time goes by, however, it is true that even the best security features at that time become vulnerable to counterfeiting. It was 1980s when holograms were first applied on banknotes and became a common security feature. However, it was found weak against counterfeiting and various countermeasures have been developed. Security design aims to enhance security and usability by combining security features and design elements. In this study, security designs were thoroughly analyzed by investigating location and size of design subject and elements, colours, balance of offset and intaglio printing, numerals and characters, design of guilloche in G20 country's highest denomination banknotes. In addition, interviews of experts were conducted in various fields related to banknote designs. This process led to a conclusion on how to draw up a security design. First, placing similar security elements adjacent to each other improves security. Second, colour classification is very important to distinguish denominations. Main colours should be easily visible by properly combining offset and intaglio printing. It would be also better to adopt special design elements in common area. In addition, location and size should be chosen well so that the main subject is clearly expressed. Third, security features visually identifying authenticity should be designed so that the features are easily represented while overlapping the printing elements. Fourth, letters and numerals are elements directly conveying information on denomination. Though it could be designed in such a way as to overlap with other elements, it is more important to convey information concisely than anything else. Therefore, it should be applied to well-revealed colours or backgrounds.
