This study aims to understand divorced male ex-offenders' experience of family relationship cutoff in depth and provide basic data for the operation of the related social reintegration services and the advancement of social welfare based on the research results. To achieve the research purpose, an in-depth interview was conducted with five male ex-offenders who had been in prison and experienced severance in their family relationship at the time around the incidence. The collected data were analyzed, applying a qualitative case study method. First, through a within-case analysis, this study understood the individual experiences of the research participants in the context they encountered and conducted a comparative analysis of individual cases in order. Next, a cross-case analysis was conducted to find similar experiences of the research participants, concerning the research topics. Especially, the cross-case analysis discovered 15 components in total throughout all the research participants' experiences. On the ground of this, four sub-topics were revealed, including “A sanctuary no longer reachable”, “Circumstances in which it is difficult to reach out my hand”, “The dream of the head of household collapsed by previous conviction”, and “The family I long for in spite of my flaws.” In addition, like the central topic, “Rebuilding the collapsed tower with a handful of sand,” the meaning of divorced male ex-offenders' experience of family relationship cutoff was finally revealed. Lastly, on the basis of the points found in this study, practical and policy suggestions were made for supporting the family relationships of male ex-offenders and promoting social reintegration.
