Analyzing promising technologies for manufacturing-service convergence using patent analysis: a case of autonomous vehicle

Recently, product-service integration has been discussed as an important driver for technological innovation. However, limited attention has been paid to investigate and identify emerging technologies that are expected to be effectively converged for innovation. Even some previous works have discussed product-service convergence using patent analysis, they employed link prediction based on similarity measures. Therefore, this study aims to suggest a patent-based framework that can be used for investigating and identifying promising technologies for product-service convergence. First, this study defines service technology and classifies current patent classification into manufacturing IPCs and service IPCs. Then, we analyzed the convergence between manufacturing IPCs and service IPCs using network analysis. Next, we suggested five patent-based indicators to identify promising technologies - convergence strength, convergence speed, convergence flexibility, convergence novelty, and convergence brokerage – and identified promising technologies. This study is expected to be used for analyzing and identifying promising technologies under circumstances where technology convergence plays a key role in innovation.
