초록
[연구목적] 기업이 환위험에 노출될수록 외환손익 및 이익의 변동성과 불확실성이 확대될 것이다. 따라서 환위험에 노출되어 있는 기업의 경영자들은 환위험 관리 전략을 구사할 것으로예상된다. 본 연구는 기업의 환위험이 경영자능력에 따라 효율적으로 관리되는지를 실증 분석하고자 한다. [연구방법] 2009년부터 2013년까지 유가증권 상장기업을 대상으로 경제적 환위험 노출이 미래이익 변동성에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 그리고 Demerjian et al.(2012)의 연구에서 사용된경영자능력 변수를 통해 경영자능력이 환위험 노출과 미래이익 변동성의 관계에 영향을 미치는지 검증하였다. [연구결과] 분석결과, 기업이 보유한 외화자산 및 부채의 비중이 클수록 미래이익 변동성이커지는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 경영자능력이 높을수록 환위험 노출에 따른 미래이익 변동성을낮추는 것으로 나타났다. [연구의 시사점] 경영자능력이 환위험 노출에 의한 미래이익 변동성에 영향을 미치는 요인임을 실증한 본 연구 결과는 기업들에게 환위험 관리의 중요성을 인식시켜줄 수 있는 증거를 제시할 것이다. 또한, 이해관계자들의 의사결정 시 환위험 노출이 큰 기업들에 주의를 기울여야 하는 필요성을 인식시키는 기회를 제공할 것으로 기대된다.
Abstract
[Purpose] Prior literature provides evidence of a positive relation between managerial ability and firm performance or market value. But there is no study about the relationship between managers’ ability and future earnings under foreign exchange risk. This study is aimed to examine the effect of manager ability on the foreign exchange risk management. [Methodology] Using 2,474 firm-year observations from 2009 to 2013, we investigates the effect of foreign exchange risk exposure on future earnings volatility and the relation between managerial ability and future earnings volatility under economic exposure to foreign currency risk. [Findings] The results of analyses indicate that foreign exchange risk is correlated with future earnings volatility with positively and significantly. Also, we show that managerial ability is higher, there is lower probability of future earnings volatility under economic exposure to foreign currency risk. [Implications] Our results may have opportune implications for investors to suggest that detailed attention should be paid to firms with relatively large exposure to foreign exchange risk, such as manager's characteristics.
