본 연구는 미국 주식형 뮤추얼 펀드를 대상으로 시장 불확실성에 따른 펀드의 횡단면 알파분포를 비교하였다. 시장 상황을 주식시장 수익률, VIX(Volatility Index), EPU(Economic Policy Uncertainty) 지수에 따라 불확실성이 높은 기간과 낮은 기간을 나누어 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 주식시장 수익률과 VIX로 구분하였을 때, 불확실성이 높은 기간에서 펀드 OLS(Ordinary Least Squares) 알파 분포가 더 넓음을 볼 수 있었다. 하지만 EPU 지수에 따라 시장상황을 구분하였을 때, 펀드 횡단면 알파 분포에 일관된 영향을 미치지 않았다. 이는 주식에 주로 투자하는 주식형 펀드 성과가 주식시장이 불안정할 때 극단적인 성과 그룹에서 알파의 절대값이 크지만, 경제 상황은 주식형 펀드 성과 분포에 미미한 영향을 미친다는 것을 의미한다. 개별 펀드의 실제 수익률 자료와 펀드 횡단면 알파 분포의 정보를 함께 고려할 수 있는 베이지안(Bayesian) 알파와 비교하였을 때, OLS 알파 분포가 넓은 기간에 베이지안 추론의 효과가 강하게 나타났다. 이는 주식시장의 불확실성이 높을 때, 펀드 횡단면 알파 분포를 고려한 성과 평가로 펀드의 극단적인 성과를 과소 및 과대평가하지 않을 수 있음을 시사한다.
Abstract
This study compares the cross-sectional alpha distribution based on market uncertainty in U.S. mutual funds. When the market conditions are divided by stock market returns and VIX (Volatility Index), the funds’ ordinary least squares (OLS) alpha distribution have high dispersion during periods of the high level of uncertainty. However, when the market conditions are divided according to the Economic Policy Uncertainty (EPU) index, no significant difference exists in the fund cross-sectional alpha distribution. This implies that the equity fund alpha, which is primarily invested in stocks, has a large absolute value in extremely low- or high-performance groups when the stock market is uncertain, but the economic condition has a minor impact on the fund alpha distribution. Compared to Bayesian alpha, which can take into account both the actual return data of individual funds and information on the cross-sectional alpha distribution, the effect of Bayesian inference is stronger in high dispersion periods. This suggests that when stock market uncertainty is high, performance evaluation considering the fund cross-sectional alpha distribution may not underestimate or overestimate the funds’ extreme performance.
