프리먼(M. Freeman)의 ‘다시 쓰는 자아’: 도덕성 발달의 이해

The purpose of this study is to explore Mark Freeman's Rewriting the self that discusses the problem of self in a new way in relation to moral development and narrative, unlike the conventional way of discussion about self. According to the study, Freeman's rewriting the self offers two implications of moral education. Firstly, while the conventional perspectives of self took the form of discussion of the static understanding for the explanation and the description about the ideal state of self, Freeman took the form of discussion of the dynamic understanding for realizing of the situation of the development of personality based on the problem of formation in consideration of the change and growth of self. With that in mind moral development takes place at the empirical dimension and should consider the practice of education, The latter suggests that a shift in perspective is needed to discuss the issue of self in relation to the practice of education. Secondly, it is generally understood that moral development focuses on moving forward, on the principle that it is worth coming later in time. But the matter is rather the opposite. The narrative aims to inward turn of human mind. Freeman's suggestion of narrative as ‘dialogue about the good’ is fundamentally retrospective concept, and its activity also features reflection in human mind. In this regard, the fact that narratives are attracting attention in recent instructional activity should be reconsidered in relation to the above point of view.
