In countries where the government manages the medical field, the government directly and indirectly supports the medical institutions. Means of government subsidy are largely direct subsidies and indirect subsidies. This study evaluates the effectiveness of the government's direct and indirect subsidies to increase the profitability of medical institutions. In addition, this study analyzes the effects of direct and indirect subsidies on medical institutions, which are managed by the government and which are managed by the private sector. The ratio of direct subsidies is the total amount of subsidies divided by current medical income. The ratio of indirect subsidies is the total amount of reserve fund for essential business divided by current medical income. The dependent variable is the ratio of operating profit to gross profit, which represents the profitability of medical institutions. The higher the subsidies rate of medical institutions, the lower the profitability of medical institutions. The higher the rate of reserve fund for essential business, the higher the profitability of medical institutions. Indirect subsidies, rather than direct subsidies, improves profitability for medical institutions. Therefore, government policy makers need to efficiently allocate direct and indirect subsidies to medical institutions.
