정의의 여신상과 소녀상 : 정의의 이미지에 대한 시론적 고찰

초록
정의의 상(像)은 법에 의해 정의로운 판단을 내리는 이상적인 상징물을 제시한다. 전통적으로 정의에 대한 대표적인 상징물은 칼과 저울, 법전 등이 있고 이것을 서구의 여신이 들고 있는 것으로 표현된다. 그러나 법이나 정의의 상징은 서구에서만 볼 수 있는 것은 아니다. 한국을 비롯한 아시아에서는 전통적인 정의의 상징과 함께, 서구에서의 정의의 여신상을 별도로 받아들였다. 그리고 이것이 뒤섞인 형태의 정의의 여신상은 동양적인 면모를 갖춘 관음보살상이나 선녀상 등으로 나타나기도 하였다. 하지만 관음보살상이나 선녀상의 정의의 여신상이 그 사회에서 과연 상징으로써의 지위를 획득했는지에 대해서는 별도의 논의가 필요할 것 같다. 연구는 오늘날 우리 사회에서 새로운 정의를 요구하는 조각상이, 기존의 전통적 상징을 섞는 것에서 나아가 정의에 대한 이미지를 담는 장소로써 조각상 형태를 활용하고 있다는 점에 주목하고자 한다. 그 과정에서 오늘날 정의를 향한 이미지가 신이나 영웅이 아닌 평범한 인간의 형태로 등장하고 있는 사실에 주목하고, 시민들이 자발적으로 세운 조각상인 소녀상과 빈 의자의 의미를 통해 정의의 상의 현재적 의미가 무엇인지를 드러내고자 한다. 이 연구가 제시하고자 하는 바는 정의의 상에 대한 도상적인 관조와 분석이 아니라, 무엇이 부정의이며 정의인지를 느끼고 공감하면서 책임과 함께하는 정의에 대한 이미지를 우리가 어떻게 받아들이고 또 만들어가고 있는가에 대한 물음이다.
Abstract
The image of justice presents the ideal symbol of righteous judgment by law. Traditionally, the representative symbols of justice include swords, scales and codes, and these symbols are represented by the Western goddess. However, symbols of law and justice are not only found in the West. In Korea and elsewhere, Asia accepts the Western Statue of Justice as well as the traditional symbol of justice, and the goddess of justice in a mixed form has appeared as the statue of Quan Yin Bodhisattva or the Faerie, which has an oriental aspect. However, it may be necessary to discuss whether the Statue of Justice or the Statue of Justice won the status as a symbol in the society. The study focuses on the fact that statues that demand new definitions in our society today use the form of statues as a place for individual narratives, in addition to mixing traditional symbols. In the process, we pay attention to the fact that the image of justice emerges in the form of ordinary human beings, not gods or heroes, and attempts to reveal what the current meaning of justice is. The purpose of this study is not to appreciate the statue, but to ask how we are creating a way to recognize, sympathize, and take responsibility for what injustice and justice are.
