The shift-share analysis allows us to divide a change into regional (geographic, spatial), cross-sectional (structural) and global (domestic) factors in relation to one or more features. The traditional approaches to shift-share analysis take into consideration the geographic aspect of changes in the value of a studied variable. They do not, however, assimilate the idea of spatial relationships among regions; instead, they see them as economically and geographically unconnected objects. This paper introduces a spatial component to the traditional shift-share analysis, to take into account the spatial dependencies. The traditional shift-share analysis shows that for HS8458 exports both regional shift effect and sectoral shift effect work in Gwangju, but sectoral shift effect plays a central role in Gyeongnam. The regional shift effects of both regions have the opposite signs. This study also finds that for in Daegu, Gyeonggi, Incheon and Busan regional shift effect is a principal component. The spatial shift-share analysis, furthermore, indicates that Gwangju has a competitive advantage over Daegu and Gyeonggi, and an indeterminate advantage over Incheon and Gyeongnam, but has a disadvantage over Busan. This paper shows that for HS8457 exports the regional shift effect works as an overwhelmingly powerful component in Gwangju, while sectoral shift effect is a principal component in Gyeongnam. The regional shift effect has opposite sign for both regions. We find that regional shift effect of five regions is greater than national share effect and sectoral shift effect, and that of Ulsan and Chungnam is by far greater than national share effect and sectoral shift effect. The spatial analysis indicates that for HS8457 exports Gwangju has a competitive advantage over five regions but experiences disadvantage over 2018-2019.
