The purpose of this study is to describe the adaptation experiences of a divorced woman, the researcher ‘I’, using autoethnography. Autoethnography is a research method emphasizing ‘my own experiences’ as a main resource to describe the individual’s experience in the socio-cultural context. The data for the study compiled my adaptation experiences in chronological order after divorce and recorded the process in the form of autobiographical writing. The results of the study are summarized as follows: First, the most influential idea in the divorce process was that only when ‘I’ was happy could my son grow up to be happy. Second, the divorce experience made ‘I’ aware of myself as an individual able to enjoy my own life without being subordinate to anyone, and helped to establish a restructuring of my consciousness. Third, the post-divorce adaptation process presented the challenge of a new environment and expanded the social self. Finally, ‘I’ dreamed that I wanted to be happy and to grow old beautifully, believing that I would continue to develop through the process of solving challenges I faced. It is hoped that this study will provide empathy and consolation for divorced women struggling to attain successful adaptation to their new situations, and thus contribute to enhancing the social understanding of divorce.
