쿳시의 철의 시대(Age of Iron)에 나타난 모성의 의미

Lee, Younghwa. “Motherhood: J. M. Coetzee’s Age of Iron.” Studies in English Language & Literature 46.3 (2020): 253-275. In Age of Iron, J.M. Coetzee addresses the specific situation in South Africa unlike his other novels where he does not explicitly involve his country’s political circumstances. In order to resolve the conflict between white and black in his country, Coetzee employs a white female protagonist Curren, whose attitudes are changed toward the Other through her hospitality and motherhood. Curren, suffering from cancer, represents the situation where there are prevalent violences and atrocities between white and black in South Africa. However, through her universal motherhood, Curren embraces the Other, such as not only Vercueil as a family member but also Bhecki and John as children, which, Coetzee believes, allows her to achieve the country’s resuscitation as well as her own individual salvation from illness.
