동화의 단막극 각색 양상 연구 -<나는 뻐꾸기다>를 중심으로-

본고는 <나는 뻐꾸기다>을 중심으로 동화의 단막극 각색 양상을 살펴보았다. <나는 뻐꾸기다>는 EBS <TV로 보는 원작동화>의 시리즈 중 하나다. 이 드라마는 김혜연의 동화 『나는 뻐꾸기다』를 원작으로 하였고, 현대 사회에서 발생하는 가족 현실의 문제를 상징적인 단어로 시사하고 있다는 점에서 주목된다. 특히 단막극은 짧은 시간 동안 핵심적인 이야기를 간결하고 담백하게 형상화하여 이야기 구조가 함축적이라는 점이 특징이 있는데 <나는 뻐꾸기다>에서 그것이 잘 드러난다. 이에 원작동화 『나는 뻐꾸기다』를 각색한 단막극 <나는 뻐꾸기다>는 매체간의 차이로 인해 표현이 용이한 것과 표현할 수 없는 부분이 발생한다. 표현이 용이한 부분은 이야기의 가치에서 이미 검증받은 원작의 플롯, 일상생활에서 쉽게 접할 수 있는 원작의 현실 공간, 사회적 현실을 반영하는 소재를 선택했다는 점이다. 그러나 단막극에서 표현할 수 없는 부분은 캐릭터와 플롯의 생략과 변형이 일어났다. 캐릭터의 심리를 표현하는데 내레이션 방식을 전략적으로 사용하기도 했다. 하지만 인물의 복잡한 심리상태를 드러내기에는 한계가 있었다. TV드라마가 어린이를 대상으로 하고 원작보다 더 윤리적이어야 한다는 공공성 측면에서도 플롯의 생략은 발생할 수밖에 없었다. 이와 같이, <나는 뻐꾸기다>는 문자와 영상이라는 두 매체간의 차이를 극복하고 상호 보완적인 표현 방식을 통해 새로운 작품을 만들어냈다. 이는 세 가지 의미로 정리된다. 첫째, 단막극의 특성을 이용해 짧은 시간 안에 장편동화를 방영함으로써 대중에게 원작을 알리는 효과가 있다. 둘째, 시사성이 높은 이야기를 어린이드라마로 각색했다는 점에서 어린이들에게 교육적 효과를 기대할 수 있다. 셋째, 기본적인 스토리가 갖춰진 동화를 영상화함으로써 단막극에 질적 향상을 가져왔다. 이 연구를 통해 동화를 원작으로 각색한 단막극이 더 활발하게 이루어지고 발전되기를 기대한다.
Abstract
This paper examined the adaptation of a one-act play of children's story, focusing on <I'm a Cuckoo>. <I'm a Cuckoo> is one of the series of EBS <Original children’s story on TV>. This drama is noteworthy in that it is based on Kim Hye-yeon's children's story, “I'm a Cuckoo”, and suggests the problems of family reality in modern society in symbolic words. In particular, A one-act play is a drama that briefly depicts a key story in a short period of time, characterized by its connotation of the story structure, which is well illustrated in "I'm a Cuckoo."As a result, the one-act plays <I'm a Cuckoo>, which adapts the original children’s story, “I'm Cuckoo”, is an expression that is easy to express and a part that cannot be expressed. The part that is easy to express is that the material that reflects the social space and the reality space of the original that can be easily encountered in everyday life, and the plot of the original that has already been verified in the value of the story. However, omission and transformation of characters and plots occurred in areas that could not be expressed in one-act play. The narration method was also used strategically to express the character's psychology. However, there was a limit to revealing a person's complex psychological state. The omission of the plot also occurred in that TV dramas should be more ethical than the original, considering the publicity, and that they are dramas for children. As such, <I'm a Cuckoo> overcomes the difference between the two media, text and video, and created new works through complementary expressions. This is organized in three senses. First, it has the effect of informing the public of the original work by airing a feature-length story in a short time using the characteristics of a one-act plays. Second, the educational effect can be expected on children in that the story with high suggestiveness has been adapted into a children's drama. Third, it has brought qualitative improvement to one-act plays by visualizing children's story with basic stories. Through this study, we hope that one-act plays adapted for original fairy tales will be more active and developed.
