중년층의 이중부양 부담에 대한 소고: 개인의 생애 전이와 이를 둘러싼 인구사회학적 맥락을 중심으로

본 연구에서는 중년층(1950년대 후반∼1960년대 후반 출생, 40대 후반∼ 60대 초반)이 그들의 부모세대(1930-1940년대 생, 현재 70대 중 후반∼80 대)와 자녀세대(1990년대 초반에서 2000년대 중반 생)에게 제공하는 부양부담의 상황을 각 세대가 직면한 생애전이의 상황이 어떻게 가족 갈등을 일으키고, 더 나아가 인구학적 문제와 어떻게 연관되는가를 살펴보았다. 통계자료 및 문헌 조사 분석 결과, 첫째, 청년층 자녀 세대의 생애전이, 즉 부모로부터의 독립, 취업, 결혼 등은 악화된 현재의 경제상황에서 매우 어려워졌기 때문에, 중년층 부모세대는 자녀들에 대한 부양을과거보다 훨씬 오래 지속해야 한다는 것을 알게 되었다. 둘째, 노년기준비가 되어 있지 않은 상황에서 노년기를 맞은 노령층 부모세대는 후기 노년기의 생애전이 과정에서 자녀세대와 부양을 둘러 싼 갈등을 빚을 가능성이 높아지게 되었다. 셋째, 이러한 과정에서 중년층들은 부모세대와 자녀 세대에 대한 부양 부담을 져야 하는 상황에 처해있으며, 그결과 자신들의 은퇴를 계속 연기시키거나 일을 그만 둔 후에도 또 새로운 일자리를 모색해야 한다. 이러한 일련의 과정은 중년층 자신들의 생애 전이를 어렵게 하면서 그들의 노년기를 위한 준비 역시 힘들게 되는결과를 초래하고 있다. 다. 본 연구에서는 개인의 생의 전이가 역사 사회적 상황에서 순조롭게 진행되지 않을 때, 그 부담은 가족 개인 성원에게 전가된다는 것을 보여준다. 같은 맥락에서 중년층의 이중부양 부담을 이해할 수 있다. 한국 사회에서는 각 세대의 생애 전이가 매우 어려운상황에 있는데도 불구하고 이를 사회적으로 지원하여 해소할 방법은 아직 충분히 마련되어 있지 않으므로 중년층의 이중부양 부담은 심화되고, 이로 인한 갈등과 스트레스가 보다 높아질 가능성이 크다고 할 수 있다.
Abstract
This study analyzed the double-care burden, stress and effects among the middle aged adults (born in the 1950s∼1960s, who are in their late 40s∼ in the early 60s), focusing on their own and the care receivers’(i.e., their parents and children) life transition in the social/demographic context. It found out 1) They financially/psychologically support their children in their 20s who have struggled to achieve the life transition like finishing school, getting a job, or building a family in the unprecedented bad economy 2) They also supported and cared their parents in their late 70s∼80s who had not financially prepared for their late years and found it very difficult to make an independent living in the late elderly life transition. 3) As a result, middle aged adults are not allowed to retire and have to continue to work not for their own, but for their parents and children, which would make them unprepared for their old age and thereby feel uncomfortable and fearful.
