공공공간 계획에서 시민중심의 참여디자인을 활성화하기 위한 co-design에 관한 연구

Analysis of Co-Design for Facilitating Participatory Design in the Planning of Public Spaces

황지현(충북대학교)

29권 5호, 116~125쪽

초록

Participatory Design(PD) in urban planning is an approach to collaborate with people who have different opinions in any design process. In PD processes, co-design tools have the potential to translate local knowledge into the planning of public spaces. However, there is a lack of investigations taking a critical view on these co-design processes in light of systematical practices. Therefore, this paper uses a case-study material from local park in Lancaster, UK, to reflect on the extensive and practical project of co-design, ‘Beyond the Castle(BTC)’. We explored (i) co-design activities which could lead Lancaster City Council to citizens’ needs and access local knowledge, (ii) the role of physical tools in the co-design process. This case study indicates that BTC was open, gradual, interactive, and accessible process, providing positive experience for participants. Co-design tools in each step of the process contributes greatly to: attracting people and giving information on co-design process, focusing current issue of the park, generating ideas of the park future in detail, curating and valuing other ideas for interaction, and transcribing and analysing into final outcome for implementation. Through reflecting a large scale of practical project, this study expands the research scope of co-design, looking into its application and further development and having practical implications in PD processes.
