A Study of Employment Environment of Non-Regular Sports Instructors : Focused on Experiences of Health Trainers in Private Sectors

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the employment environment of sports instructors in private sectors and especially focused on health trainers’ experience. The study is a qualitative case study to analyze the status of non-regular sports instructors’ employment environment, specific standards for their expertise and job security. Method: A total of ten health trainers were recruited for an in-depth interview. The research was conducted over a six-month period and used three primary data techniques; participation observation, in-depth interview and documentary analysis. The interview participants were the sports instructors in private sectors, health trainers, who have jobs in irregular based; part-timer and contract workers and the trainers who have worked as non-regular sports instructors for over 5 years. Results: As a result of the study, a total of nine factors were derived based on three research questions. 1) Non-regular sports instructors are found to experience conflicts in their employment environment. The participants in the study experienced unclear job allocation, unfair treatment, and unstable employment security. Second, the study found that the lack of professional standards of sports instructors made them feel confused about job identity. Furthermore, the barriers to job entry are low. And lack of recruitment standards and evaluation tools had an effect on weakening expertise. Third, as a proposal for job security, the participants suggested that strengthening the qualification system & restructuring the qualification stage, stabilizing & improving the employment of non-regular workers, and changing social awareness & professional ethics are needed. Conclusion: In summary, this study proposes the necessity for preparing countermeasures of sports jobs through the analysis of the employment environment of non-regular sports instructors in the private sector.
