최저임금이 산업별 임금과 근로시간에 미치는 영향

The purpose of this paper is to analyze whether the increase in the minimum wage has contributed to securing the life of workers by guaranteeing a certain level of livelihood for workers. To this end, the effect of the increase in the minimum wage on wages and working hours of wage workers by industry was estimated using the 「Regional Employment Survey (Type B)」 of the National Statistical Office, and a simulation analysis was conducted on the determination of the monthly average wage by industry. The main findings are as follows. First, it was revealed that there was a trade-off between an increase in hourly wage and a decrease in working hours according to the increase in the minimum wage. Second, the monthly wage is determined by the size of the increase in hourly wage and the decrease in working hours, where we found heterogeneity by industry. Third, despite the increase in the minimum wage, in some industries, the decrease in working hours overwhelmed the effect of increasing the hourly wage, and it was found that the monthly wage decreased. Putting the above results together, the minimum wage increase causes conflicting effects such as increased hourly wage and decreased working hours. In particular, the purpose of the system may be neutralized depending on the heterogeneity of each industry. This implies that in deliberating on the minimum wage, it is necessary to find a way to differentiate the minimum wage by reflecting the characteristics of the industry, company size, and region.
