다학제적 디자인 연구의 유형과 특성

This study started from recognition of the difference across disciplines in design research. Its purpose is to explore the types and characteristics of design research conducted in disciplines other than the study of design. Understanding the characteristics of design research in multiple discilines helps bridge the cognitive gaps and facilitate communication for convergence and interdisciplinary research. Thus, the study developed a visualization framework, which helps identify the types and characteristics of design research in the multidisciplinary perspective. Professional coders conducted a content analysis and qualitative coding of design definition, design theory, and the meaning of design in design-related academic articles. The main findings of the study are as follows. First, the framework for data visualization enables to intuitively understand and analyze the number and characteristics of design-related studies through identifying patterns. Second, the application of the framework to the subject of education (the second-most active field of design research following after the study of business administration) revealed that the academic area sees design as a methodology, creative ideation, problem solving, and process, especially centered upon design thinking. Lastly, the study of education uses design not expectedly as a word applicable for interdisciplinary research but rather as a professional word (jargon) within the discipline. Further research will need to explore the conceptual identity of design-related multidisciplinary studies in disciplines that use design as a keyword.
