Analytical Model to Evaluate the Performance of Single-Lane Dual-Robot Material Handling System

This paper develops an analytical model to evaluate the performance of the SD-MHS (single lane dual robot-material handling system) that is newly used in the hi-tech industry. The analytical model uses both the simulation and scheduling techniques. In particular, the model that can accurately calculate back tracking movements or waiting for collision avoidance is presented in consideration of the positions of two robots over time for processing simultaneously given logistics tasks along with the single lane in the SD-MHS. In order to validate the practicality and usefulness of the analytical model proposed by this paper, an experimental analysis is conducted based on the data collected in the industry. As a result of the analysis, it is shown that the average processing capacity of SD-MHS increases compared to SS-MHS (single lane single robot – MHS) as the length of SD-MHS increases, which is consistent with the expectation of practitioners in the industry. In addition, the paper shows that it is necessary to carefully determine some of the parameters in actual uses since the processing capacity of SD-MHS varies considerably depending on how the operational parameters of the SD-MHS are determined. The practical application of the analytical model presented in this paper is expected to be useful to more accurately determine in which cases SD-MHS should be used and to determine operational parameters of the SD-MHS.
