고문의 정치학과 외설적 변용 - J.M. 쿳시의 『야만인을 기다리며』

본고는 J.M. 쿳시의 『야만인을 기다리며』에서 나타난 고문의 정치기술, 그리고 고문 희생자를 대상으로 외설적으로 변용되어 작동하는권력에 대해 논의한다. 이 소설에서 주인공 치안판사는 이름이 알려지지 않은 제국의 변방에서 고문의 두 당사자, 즉 고문관 졸 대령과 고문당하는 야만인들을 제삼자의 관점에서 관찰하면서 고문 정치의 폭력성을 경험하고, 동시에 고문을 방관할 수밖에 없는 자기모순에 빠진다. 이런 맥락에서 본고는 일레인 스캐리와 슬라보예 지젝의 이론을 논의하면서 정치적인 층위와 개인적인 층위에서 고문 정치와 외설성을 탐색한다. 먼저 정치적측면에서, 본고는 고문관이 희생자의 고통을 부인하는 메커니즘을 논의하고, 고문에 의해 희생자가 이웃이라는 인간적인 차원에서 적이라는 사물로 전락하는 과정을 탐색한다. 다음으로 개인적인 측면에서, 치안판사는 판사로서 정의를 실현해야 되는 윤리적인입장과 제국의 관료로서 희생자의 고통을 묵인할 수밖에 없는 딜레마에 빠진다. 이러한딜레마를 벗어나기 위한 치안판사의 행위는 자기기만의 합리화에 지나지 않고, 오히려고문 희생자의 몸을 성애의 대상으로 만들고 그녀의 상처를 자극하고 심문하는 것임을확인한다. 이러한 중층적 탐색의 과정을 거쳐, 본고는 치안판사와 같은 제삼자가 어떻게자기기만적 위선의 껍질을 벗고 자유로운 주체로 변형되는지를 논의한다.
Abstract
This paper explores the politics of torture and its obscene power in J.M. Coetzee’s novel, Waiting for the Barbarians by drawing on Elaine Scarry’s and Slavoj Žižek’s theories on torture. The act of torture in the novel represents a pivotal strategy for reducing the barbarians to the enemy at an outpost. The torturers hold an excess of power over the bodies of their victims, by visibly abolishing the dimensions of the neighborhood. The paper raises questions about the mechanisms by which torturers exert violence over human bodies, and the Magistrate as the spectator makes the tortured body into a fetish, thus validating the politics of torture. Perceiving the minimal difference between the torturer and the spectator, the Magistrate seeks to find a way of escaping from the politics of the Empire, by sending the barbarian girl to her tribe. This represents the becoming-nomad of the Magistrate, which is only available through his shared experience of the barbarians’ torture and humiliation.
