본 연구의 목적은 20세기 스위스 작곡가 프랑크 마르탱(Frank Martin, 1890-1974)의 「Ballade for flute and piano, 1939」에 나타난 음악적 특징과 연주법을 분석하여, 정확한 해석과 표현으로 이 곡을 연주하려는 플루트와 피아노 연주자에게 도움을 주는 것이다. 본 연구에서는 문헌 연구분석 방법으로 마르탱의 생애와 음악적 특징, 그리고 작곡기법을 알아본 후, 이를 바탕으로 「Ballade for flute and piano, 1939」을 분석하였다. 그 결과, 마르탱은 전통적 음악형식을 기본으로 곡 전체에 통일감과 안정감을 주면서, 주제 선율의 변형과 발전, 그리고 모방과 대조 등에는 20세기의 12음 기법을 적용하여 독특한 색채의 음악을 만들어 냈다. 또한 작품에 나타난 12음 기법의 반음계적 진행은 ‘중심음’을 바탕으로 움직이고 있어, 무조성의 선율 진행에서도 조성감이 느껴지도록 하는 효과를 주는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 곡을 효과적으로 연주하기 위해서는 먼저 플루트와 피아노 연주자 모두, 전통적 음악 형식과 20세기 무조음악에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 마르탱의 음악적 시도와 기법을 이해하고 연주하는 것이 중요하다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyze the musical characteristics in Frank Martin (1890–1974)’s Ballade for flute and piano, 1939 to help flute and piano performers who want to play the music with accurate interpretation and expression. To accomplish this goal, this study examined Martin’s life, musical characteristics and compositional style with the meta-analysis technique and based on this, Ballade for flute and piano, 1939 was analyzed. As a result, Martin created a unique color of music based on the traditional music style, giving the entire song a sense of unity and stability, and applying the twelve-tone technique of the 20th century to the variations and developments of the theme melody, imitation and contrast. In order to play this work effectively, it is important for both flute and piano players to understand Martin’s musical techniques and attempts which combine traditional musical style with 20th century atonal music.
