성경 해석학으로 본 밀턴의 『이혼론』

존 밀턴의 이혼에 관한 성경해석은 개인의 자유를 철저하게 신봉한 그의 신념의 산물이다. 동시에 그의 해석은 성경 원전으로 돌아가 그 속에 담긴 하나님의 뜻을 정확하게 파악하여 원래의 의미를 되찾으려는 작업이다. 밀턴은 영국 국교회가 이혼을 금지하는 규정을 재가한 것에 대한 반발로 이혼의 합당한 근거를 그의 성경해석학에서 찾는다. 그는 당시 영국의 교회법이 성경에 기록된 이혼에 관한 구절을 글자 그대로 해석함으로써 가장 신성해야 할 혼인관계에 양립할 수 없는 두 배우자를 강제로 묶어두는 모순을 야기한다고 비난한다. 이것은 교회가 개인의 자유를 침해하고 결혼을 억압의 수단으로 삼는 비 성경적 관습을 시행하고 있음을 의미한다. 영국의 교회법은 육체적 부정만을 이혼 사유로 규정한 성경에 따라 부부간에 존재하는 정신적이고 영적인 부조화를 인정하지 않는다. 그러나 밀턴의 성경해석에 따르면, “사람이 혼자 사는 것이 좋지” 않아 “돕는 배필”을 주기 위하여 하나님이 창조한 최초의 제도인 결혼은 상호 이해와 사랑, 헌신과 도움이 전제된 관계이어야만 한다. 그렇지 않을 경우 그것은 성경의 최상위 법인 사랑의 법을 위반하는 것이기 때문에 양립할 수 없음을 근거로 이혼을 허용해야 한다는 주장이다. 이것은 수백 년 앞을 내다본 밀턴의 예언적이고 현대적 성경해석일 뿐 아니라 결혼과 이혼에 관한 중요한 패러다임 시프트의 근거가 된다.
Abstract
John Milton’s biblical hermeneutics in his divorce tracks is a product of his strong belief in and commitment to personal and individual freedom. At the same time, it is an attempt to find the true meaning of God’s will revealed in Scripture with regard to marriage, the first institution created by God for the good of mankind. This study tries to see Milton’s views on divorce from his hermeneutic perspective, interpreting his stance not as liberal, but as rather conservative enough to make his opponents, so-called traditionalists, pale before his argument. In The Doctrine and Discipline of Divorce, Milton accuses the Church of England of its strict adherence to canon law in which the biblical verses on divorce are construed so literally that it renders divorce almost impossible in England. Milton attacks the Church for its complete ignorance of incompatibility between husband and wife—the single most important factor for the fulfillment of God’s purpose in the joining of man and woman in matrimony. This study finds Milton’s claim to be prophetic, as well as modern, in terms of its foresight that has paved the way for a paradigm shift in biblical hermeneutics of marriage and divorce.
