From the phenomenon-driven perspective, on the basis of data from Thomson Reuters Web of ScienceTM database covering a period of 29 years (January 1990 to August 2019), this study employs bibliometric and content analyses to evaluate the research state of the internationalization and innovation relationship. This study is to assist internationalization scholars in positioning their research more explicitly and encourage them to deeply think about which approach and theoretical mechanisms best fit their research questions and designs.
