특허 인용 네트워크 분석을 통한 NAND 플래시 메모리 산업의 국가 기술 주도권 연구
A Study on the National Technology Leadership of NAND Flash Memory Industry through the Analysis of Patent Citation Network

최근 4차 산업혁명으로 인한 반도체 산업의 폭발적인 성장에서 비휘발성 메모리 반도체인 NAND 플래시 메모리 산업 또한 저전력, 고성능, 대용량화를 기반으로 급속하게 발전하였다. 과거 일본에서 NAND 플래시 메모리를 발명하여 기술 주도권을 가졌으나, 현재는 오히려 한국과 미국 기업이 시장을 점유하고 있다. 2000년 부터 NAND 플래시 메모리가 NOR 플래시 메모리를 대체하기 시작하였고, 2010년 이후 3D NAND 플래시 메모리로의 산업 패러다임 변화가 있었다. 이러한 산업적 배경에서 국가 기술 주도권 확인을 위해 기술 혁신 측정 지표인 특허 데이터를 활용하여 인용 네트워크 분 석을 진행하였다. 주요 기업의 출원 특허를 기반으로 네트워크 변화를 시각화하고 중심성 지표를 통해 검증하였다. 또한 3D NAND 플래시 메모리로의 패러다임 변화가 네트워크에 어떠한 영향을 주었는지 확인하였다. 본 연구는 시간에 따른 특허 인용 네트워크를 확인함으로써 산업의 국가 기술 주도권이 어떻게 바뀌었는지 확인하였다는 것에 의미가 있다. 이를 통해 특허 자체의 중요성과 개수만을 기술력의 척도로 삼는 것이 아니라, 네트워크 내 중요성을 검토할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
With the recent Fourth Industrial Revolution, the market size of the semiconductor industries has been growing significantly. The NAND Flash Memory industry has evolved rapidly in response to the needs of low-power consumption, high-performance, and high-capacity. Originally, Japan had technology leadership, but now it seems that Korean and U.S. companies dominate the market. In addition, there has been an industrial paradigm shift to 3D NAND. To better understand this industry, I conduct a citation network analysis of patents, a measure of technological innovation, to investigate technology initiatives of major countries. Based on the patents of the players, I visualize how the network has changed and validate it with a centrality index. In addition, I identify how paradigm shifts to 3D NAND have affected the network. This study on the chronological changes in the citation network has significant implications about how technology leadership has been reshaping. This will allow us to measure the importance of related technologies and examine their impacts on the network, rather than simply using the number of patents as a measure of technological advance.
