초록
This study aims to investigate cultureme translation strategies of licensed musical Rent. Musical Rent is a work with distinct periodicity and locality. This study classified culturemes into six categories: units of measurement, proper nouns, proper nouns with implications, social and cultural terms, idioms and slangs, and cuss and sexual vocabulary. The analysis revealed that the most frequent strategy in Rent was neutralization where the translator deleted cultural specificities, focusing on delivering messages. The translator also attempted to tone down or delete slangs and cuss vocabulary while intensifying the strength of sexual vocabulary. This shows that the translator actively intervened to make it relatively easy for the audience to culturally accept unfamiliar vocabularies but at the same time to effectively deliver the key message of the musical to the audience. This study contributes to the expansion of musical research in quantitative terms, but the data are limited to one musical, produced in 2004. Avenues for future research include a comparative study of different versions of scripts produced in 2011 and 2020.
