Dual-use technology is defined as a technology that can be used in both defense and civil industries. Recently, the role of dual-use technology in the defense industry has become especially important. It is still difficult, however, to find studies examining how this technology affects innovation performance. Dual-use technology development can expand the scope of knowledge of company, so it have a positive effect on innovation performance. Therefore, this study focuses on the effects of dual-use technology on innovation performance. Therefore, this study examined the effects of dual-use technology on innovation performance of firms focused on 184 Korean companies in defense industry. In light of this, the study's results indicate that dual-use technology can have a positive effect on innovation performance. The regional density of defense firms and the network centrality weaken the positive effects of dual-use technology. Because innovation performance plays an important role in defense company, the results of this study are expected to increase interest in the development of dual-use technology for defense companies and revive the domestic defense industry. Knowledge of a company can be biased toward military technology if a company is located in places where defense companies are concentrated or influential in military technol ogy networks. The knowledge bias hinders the understanding of technologies among other industries, weaken ing the positive impact of dual-use technology development. Through empirical analysis, this study confirmed the positive effect of dual-use technology devel opment on the innovation performance of defense companies. In addition, the military technology network and the density of defense companies weaken the impact of dual-use technology development. To increase the effects of dual-use technology, then, we can say that relationships with companies in various fields play a more important role than strengthening relations with defense companies. As the use of Fourth Industrial Revolution technology increases in the defense industry, the importance of dual-use technology is likely to increase. Through this study, we expect that defense companies will pay more attention to the development of civil and military technologies. Although the government has been implementing policies on dual-use technology, the overall evaluation is that this is insufficient. Consideration of the industrial composition of the network and the region in which it is located will yield better results.
