Based on the timeline of the content of Chinese design, we analyze three eras from the modern era to the present day. The scope of research is modern, contemporary and recent times period, and the research method applies design and historical theory, design and Chinese historical theory, and design and social theory. Modern design histories and theories were in the form of ‘high artcraft’, contemporary design histories and theories had a strong political color, and recent times design histories and theories caused changes in sensibility, personality and humanities. Modern design was an early situation where the fusion of China and the West and functionalism began to gradually take hold, and the form of a series of architecture in South China stands out. As for modern design, contemporary Chinese design began to be established, and the style expressing politics was predominant, mainly in Beijing. Recent times designs were developed in the direction of emphasizing artistry and humanity, and architecture was embodied in the direction of showing off national power. In conclusion, we present the following three points. First, modern, contemporary, and recent times Chinese designs show a tendency to develop in an unconventional way by external shocks rather than internal development drivers. Second, design theory and practice were developed in the direction of adding Chinese style to the dominance of Western design ideas and practices. Third, the model of acceptance and development of the self-model of Chinese design in the future will serve as a model for us as well.
