왕양명의 ‘양지(良知)’와 길버트 라일의 ‘Intelligence’를 바탕으로 한 ‘마음이 고와야 춤이 곱다’라는 한국전통춤 테제 해석

이 글은 한국전통춤계 원로들이 한목소리로 강조하는 ‘마음이 고와야 춤이 곱다.’라는 테제를 왕양명의 양지(良知)과 길버트 라일의 예지(睿知, intelligence) 이론을 바탕으로 해석한 것이다. 이를 위해 ⑴ 마음이 곱다는 말의 의미, ⑵ 마음이 고와야 춤이 고운 이유, ⑶ 무자(舞者)와 감상자의 감응 관계를 살펴보았다. ‘마음이 고와야 춤이 곱다.’라는 테제는 왕양명에 의하면 ‘순수하고, 정밀하고, 정결하고, 맑고 밝은 양지(良知)가 발현된 것으로[精明]’, 개인의 욕망에 가려지지 않은 ‘마음[心]’의 ‘진실성[誠]’이 그 조건이라고 해석할 수 있다. 라일은 우리가 마음이라고 말하는 것은 그의 ‘성향’이 드러난 것으로, 행위를 보고 행위자의 성향[propensities]을 알 수 있는 것이라고 한다. 따라서 라일에 의하면 ‘마음이 고와야 춤이 곱다.’라는 테제는 무자가 예지를 발휘하여 성향에 맞는 춤을 출 때, 고운 춤을 추게 된다고 해석할 수 있다. 그리고 양지의 ‘알아차림(awareness)’과 무자의 ‘제2의 본성’의 발현으로 인해 감상자는 무자의 마음을 알아차릴 수 있는 것으로 이해할 수 있다. 무자와 감상자의 감응이 가능한 것은 만물동체(萬物同體)와 일기유통(一氣流通)을 전제로 한 우리의 몸이 타자들과의 감응을 위한 계기[感應之幾]이기 때문이라고 설명할 수 있다.
Abstract
This paper interprets the theme of “The dance is beautiful when the heart is beautiful.” emphasized in the Korean traditional dance world based on the mind theory of Wang Yang-Ming and Gilbert Ryle. ⑴ The meaning of the word “good-hearted” was examined, ⑵ the reason why the dance is beautiful was examined, ⑶ how the emotions of dancers and audience were possible. In “The dance is beautiful when the heart is beautiful.” according to Wang Yang-Ming, the heart is a pure, precise, clean, clear and bright, and the condition is “truthfulness[誠]” that is not hidden by individual desires by “heart.” According to Ryle, since the propensity of the actor can be known by looking at the action, the intelligence of the dancer must be exercised so that he can dance according to the dancer’s tendency. And liangzhi 良知’s “awareness,” the viewer can recognize the dancer’s mind. The concept of liangzhi is closely related to Wang’s organic worldview, in which he sees the entire universe as one whole organism.
