번아웃 현상에 대한 성경적 이해: 요나를 중심으로

본 논문은 최근 사회 전반 혹은 경영학의 인사관리 분야에서 자주 다루어지고 있는 번아웃(burnout) 현상을 성경 속에서 찾아서 분석한다. 번아웃은 개인적 차원, 개인 간 차원, 조직 차원에서 각각 접근할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 구약 성경에 등장하는 선지자 요나(Jonah)가 겪었던 개인적 차원에서의 번아웃 현상을 분석한다. 먼저 개인적 차원에서 번아웃의 원인과 결과를 설명하는 이론인 자원보존이론, 자아이미지상실 모형, 존재의미상실 모형, 기대패턴오류 모형 등을 소개하고 이를 토대로 성경에 기록된 요나의 번아웃 경험을 분석한다. 연구결과, 요나는 크게 세 차례에 걸친 번아웃을 경험하였다. 특히 제1차 번아웃 현상에서는 영적 번아웃 현상을 보여주었다. 하지만 요나는 하나님과의 소통을 통해서 번아웃을 극복하였으며, 하나님 편에서도 요나의 심리적 및 상황적 번아웃을 세밀하게 회복시키시는 사실을 발견하였다. 이러한 요나가 겪었던 번아웃 경험의 원인, 결과, 그리고 대처방안은 크리스찬들에게 그대로 적용될 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
This paper finds and analyzes the burnout phenomenon in the Bible, which has been frequently addressed in the field of human resources management in business administration or in the field of society as a whole recently. Burnouts can be approached at the individual level, at the inter-personal level, and at the organizational level. In this study, the burnout phenomenon that Jonah, a prophet in the Old Testament, experienced is analyzed at the individual level. First, the paper introduces various theories which explain the causes and consequences of burnouts at the individual level(conservation of resources model, self-image loss model, existential- meaning loss model, and expected pattern error model) and analyzes Jonah's burnout experience recorded in the Bible. The study found that Jonah experienced three major burnouts. Particularly, the first burnout demonstrated the phenomenon of spiritual burnout. However, Jonah overcame the burnout through communication with God, and he also found that the God meticulously restored Jonah's psychological and situational burnout. The causes, consequences, and coping strategies of Jonah's burnout experience could be applied to Christians.
