This study recognizes the need for an analysis tool to analyze the design of the participatory area, one of the major codes of contemporary design, and applies the main concept of the discussion on receptive aesthetics to the design to provide an integrated view of contemporary design trends. We would like to analyze This study suggests the applicability of the perspective of acceptance aesthetics to interpret the trends of contemporary design on the premise that the flow of contemporary design is due to changes in perception and acceptance between designers and users (consumers) according to the transfer of design subjects. ‘Participatory design’, one of the trends of contemporary design, is a design concept that attempts to change the way design is accepted by being asked for the act of ‘participation’ in addition to the role of using and interpreting design. In the area of participatory design, the role relationship between the designer and the user goes beyond the user who simply uses the designer's intention, and shows the relationship with the user who uses it for a different purpose or reinterprets it anew. From the point of view of aesthetics of acceptance, the audience, the subject of participatory design, could be divided into a passive receiver and an active receiver, and the passive audience does not deviate from the designer's intention, but presents variable design characteristics. The active audience goes beyond simply participating in the designer's intentions and plays a role in creating a new, indeterminate design by actively participating in the design. Active audiences have unpredictable and indeterminate properties that designers cannot intentionally or predict. From the perspective of acceptance aesthetics, research on changes in design acceptance means different forms and ways of interpreting previous designs, and will provide accurate exploration and direction for the expansion of design concepts that will continue in the future.
