버내큘러 디자인 기반 응용 디자인 개발-부산 보수동 책방골목을 중심으로-

초록
보수동 책방골목은 과거와 현재, 미래가 공존하는 공간으로 전국 유일의 지역 헌책방 골목이며, 오래된 정보와 새로운 정보가 교차되는 길목이기도 하다. 공간으로서의 책방골목을 연구한 사례는 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있었으나, 버내큘러 디자인의 관점에서 책방골목을 바라보고 그 지역만의 시각적 요소를 분석한 연구는 찾아볼 수 없었다. 이 연구의 목적은 보수동 책방골목을 구성하고 있는 버내큘러 디자인 요소를 지역 환경과 문화적 관점에서 살펴보고, 시각적 디자인 요소를 분석하여 책방골목만의 디자인 패턴을 개발하는데 있다. 연구방법은 다음과 같다. 먼저, 관련 연구고찰과 문헌조사를 통해 이론적 배경을 설정했다. 다음 단계로 사례연구를 통해 보수동 책방골목의 시각적 디자인 요소를 분석하고, 설문조사를 통해 특징적인 시각요소를 발굴·개발하여 응용디자인 패턴을 제안하고자 한다. 설문조사 후, 총 2차례에 걸친 필드 리서치가 진행되었다. 필드 리서치를 통해 ① 70~80년대 유명인들 사진의 책표지 전시, ②계단, 골목 곳곳에 쌓여진 책 꾸러미, ③ 손글씨로 쓰여지거나 옛날(조악한) 서체로 만들어진 안내문과 입간판들, ④ 목조 구조물과 전구색 조명이 특징적인 구성으로 이러한 요소들이 어우러져 복합적인 시각 이미지로 다가옴을 파악했다. 본 연구 결과는 이러한 복고적인 요소들을 고려하되시각적으로 가장 대표적으로 꼽히는 책 꾸러미 이미지를 패턴화하고 응용하여 문화상품개발로 발전시켜, 보수동 책방골목의 지역 정체성을 보존하고 부산지역의 관광지로서 홍보에 도움이 되는 것이 필수적이라는 것을 보여준다. 본 연구는 보수동 책방골목의 버내큘러 디자인 요소를 발굴·분석하는 과정에서, 대표적인 이미지를 선택하여 하나의 디자인안을 제시한 점에서 한계가 있다. 그러나 지역의 버내큘러 디자인 요소를 발굴하고 이를 많은 사람들에게 소구할 수 있는 응용 디자인으로 개발하여 그 정체성을 대중화하는 응용 연구로써 가치를 가진다.
Abstract
Bosu-dong’s bookstore alley, where the past, present, and future coexist and old and new information are exchanged, is the only district cluttered with countless bookshops selling used books in South Korea. For the this reason, it is easy to find case studies exploring the alley as a space. Still, there are no studies analyzing its local visual elements from the perspective of Vernacular design rooted in its locale. This study aims to examine Vernacular design elements that constitute the local alley from the perspective of the local environment and culture; and to analyze visual design elements. Also, it ultimately aims to develop a design pattern unique to the Bosu-dong alley. To this end, the research methodology includes the followings : reviewing related research and literature as a theoretical background; analyzing visual design elements of the alley as a case study; discovering and developing characteristic visual elements through a survey intended to propose an applied design pattern; and conducting two pieces of field research. The field research results show that a complex visual image is coordinately created with the combination of four elements - (i) the exhibition of book covers containing celebrity photos in the 70s and 80s, (ii) books stacked on stairs and narrow street, (iii) notices and signboards handwritten, or with old and shoddy typefaces, (ⅳ) wooden structures and light bulbs. The study result indicates that it is essential to preserve the local identity of Bosu-dong’s bookstore alley and promote the district as a tourist attraction by designing and patterning the images of layered book piles as well as the nostalgic elements mentioned above, and applying them to product packages, which can lead to the development of cultural products. This study has limitations in that only one design proposal is selected and presented as a representative image in discovering and analyzing the vernacular design elements of Bosu-dong’s bookstore alley. However, it is valuable as an applied study that popularizes its identity by discovering local virtual design elements and developing them as applied designs to attract many visitors.
