1980년대 정병규의 사진책 디자인과 출판 디자인적 의의

이 연구의 목적은 북 디자이너 정병규가 1980년대에 기획·편집·디자인한 책 중에서 사진책 단행본 6 종을 살펴보고 출판 디자인적 의의를 찾아보는 것이다. 정병규는 문자 중심의 단행본이 주를 이루던1980년대 출판 현장에서 이례적으로 사진책 출판에 관심을 가지며 기획·편집 주체로서의 북 디자이너면모를 보였다. 사진책은 정병규 북 디자인의 핵심이며, 이는 한국에 북 디자인 개념이 정립되는데 있어 중요한 결과물로 다뤄질 필요가 있다. 1980년대에 사진책 단행본이 시작되는 데에는 ① 한글세대독자층에서 비롯된 출판의 양적 확대, ② 전문 직업 북 디자이너의 등장, ③ 사진식자 기술에 따른 책에 대한 디자이너의 상상력 발현이라는 요인이 작용했다. 정병규가 디자인한 6종의 사진책과 사진다루기 방법론, 아트디렉팅에 관한 키워드를 정리하면 다음과 같다. ① 『김중업: 건축가의 빛과 그림자』에서 보여지는 동적인 지면 연출과 역동적인 힘의 공간 구축, ② ‘한국의 굿’, 『한국의 탈』& 『한국의 탈춤』에 적용된 과감한 사진 크로핑과 이미지의 새로운 발견, ③ 『흐르는 섬』, 『침묵의뿌리』에서 시도된 이미지와 텍스트의 관계 조율, ④ 『경주남산』에서 구현된 펼침면과 책의 구조에대한 접근 등이다. 연구자는 사진책의 출판 디자인적 의의에 대해, 사진책의 특성상 북 디자이너가 이야기를 창작하는 공동창작자이자 기획·편집의 주체임을 설명한다. 그리고 문자 중심으로 치우쳐 있는선형적 내러티브 방식의 대안으로서 비선형적 내러티브를 구축하는 것이 사진책의 주요한 가치임을주장한다. 1980년대를 지나 현재에도 이미지 중심의 단행본 출판 즉, 사진책은 북 디자인의 가능성이폭발하는 현장이다. 사진책 출판의 양적 여명기이자 질적 호황기였던 1980년대 연구는 현재의 출판현장이 무엇을 고민해야하고 어떤 변화를 모색해야하는지를 알려주고 있다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine six photobooks among books planned, edited, and designed by book designer Chung Byoung-kyoo in the 1980s and to find out the meaning of publication design. In the 1980s, when text-oriented monographs were predominant, Chung Byoung-kyoo showed an unusual interest in photobook publishing and suggested a model of a book designer as a planning and editing agent. The photobook is the core of Chung Byoung-kyoo’s book design and needs to be treated as an important result in establishing the book design concept in Korea. The start of photobooks in the 1980s was driven by factors such as ① the quantitative expansion of publications by Hangul generation readership, ② the emergence of professional book designers, and ③ the expression of the designer’s imagination for books based on phototypesetting technology. Keywords related to six photobooks designed by Chung Byoung-kyoo, photo direction, and art directing are as follows. ① Dynamic layout shown in Kim Chung-up: The Light and Shadow of an Architect ② bold photo cropping applied to ‘GUT, KOREAN SHAMANIC RITUAL series’, The Korean Masks & The Korean Masked Dance, ③ the relationship between images and texts attempted in Flowing Island and Roots of Silence, and ④ the structure of the photobook realized in Gyeongju Namsan. The paper argues about the meaning of the photobook in relation to the book design, and suggested the role of a book designer as a active collaborator and planning/editing agent who creates stories. It also points out the non-linear narrative as the main value of photobooks in comparison to the linear narrative which is still the dominant feature in book publishing. Even after more than four decades since the 1980s, image-oriented book publishing such as photobooks should be promoted as the site where new possibilities of book design can be explored. Research in the 1980s, which was a period of the rise of photobook publishing in Korea, leaves a hint on what the current publishing should be thinking about and what changes it should seek.
