문일다의 책 표지 디자인에 나타난 디자인 사상

Wen Yiduo is known as an artist and literary person representing the confusing modern period in Chinese history. He was active in not only literature but also art and design, playing an active and important role in Chinese design history. This study aims to research his thoughts of designs during the modern days when China’s design concept was formed and identify what values he pursued through a case analysis on his major book cover designs. Accordingly, among his works, book designs and relevant aesthetic thoughts were selected as the major subjects of this study. Among the periods when Wen Yiduo was active, the study was conducted focusing on the period of aesthetic thought corresponding to the early period. Among the literature and preceding studies on him published in China and Korea and his book cover designs, a total of 16 were collected for this study. Based on them, it put together his thoughts of designs and explored the developmental directivity regarding design practice on the basis of the periodic classification and categorical analysis. His thoughts on designs and design practice are closely related to and had influence on the state of the times. In the rapidly-changing modern times, he could acquire a variety of Eastern and Western knowledge and accepted the situations objectively as he had been influenced by nationalism and received Western-style education from an early age. This led him to take interest in utilitarian roles of art and seek democratization of designs as a way for national development in tune with the new era. The representative case through book design was to naturally combine traditional Chinese culture with modern Western culture. His thoughts of designs and design practice demonstrates how the root of Chinese designs was formed in a future-oriented way. This study is intended to provide a fundamental frame to compare the origins of Asian designs based on it.
