감사위원회의 객관성 수준과 감사품질이 ESG등급에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구

본 연구는 감사위원회의 객관성이 높을수록 그리고 감사품질이 좋을수록 기업의 사회, 환경, 지배구조에 영향을 미쳐 높은 ESG 등급을 획득할 가능성이 있는지에 대해 검토하였다. 이를 위해 한국ESG기준원에서 측정하고 있는 ESG 등급을 활용하여 감사위원회 내 사외이사의 비율과 외부감사인이 대형회계법인인지 여부와의 상관관계를 살펴보았다. 2012년부터 2021년까지 한국거래소에 상장된 기업을 대상으로 실증 분석한 결과 감사위원회 내 사외이사의 비율과 ESG 등급은 유의한 양(+)의 상관관계를 나타냈고, 대형회계법인 여부도 ESG 등급과 유의한 양(+)의 상관관계를 보고하였다. 이러한 결과는 내부 감사조직의 객관성과 외부감사인의 품질이 ESG 등급에 미치는 직접적인 영향을 확인하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 또한 양질의 감사품질을 유지하는 기업일수록 지속가능성에 초점을 둔 경영활동을 통해 높은 ESG 등급을 기록할 가능성이 크다는 점을 밝혔다는 측면에서 시사하는 바가 있을 것으로 기대한다.
Abstract
This study examined whether the higher the objectivity of the audit committee and the better the audit quality, the more likely it is to obtain a high ESG grade by affecting the society, environment, and governance of the company. To this end, the relationship between the ratio of outside directors in the audit committee and whether the external auditor is a large accounting firm was examined using the ESG rating measured by the Korea ESG Standards Institute. As a result of empirical analysis of companies listed on the Korea Exchange from 2012 to 2021, the ratio of outside directors and ESG grade in the audit committee showed a significantly positive (+) correlation, and whether a large accounting firm was also reported to have a significant positive (+) correlation with ESG grade. These results are significant in that they confirmed the direct effect of the objectivity of the internal audit organization and the quality of external auditors on the ESG grade. In addition, it is expected that there will be implications in those companies that maintain a high level of audit quality are more likely to record a high ESG rating through management activities focused on sustainability.
