ESG(Environmental, Social, Governance)는 환경, 사회, 지배구조라는 단어의 조합이지만 숨은 키워드는 바로 기업의 지속가능성, 기업가치, 그리고 비재무적 성과지표라고 할 수 있다. 과거 기업가치는 재무제표와 같은 정량적 지표에 의해 주로 평가되어 왔지만, 전 세계적인 기후변화 위기와 코로나19 팬데믹을 거치면서 최근에는 ESG와 같은 비재무적 가치의 중요성이 커지고 있다. ESG와 밀접한 연관을 맺고 있는 용어인 ‘지속가능성(sustainability)’이 의미하듯이 ESG는 기업가치에 중·장기적인 영향을 미치는 요소들이라 할 수 있다. 환경, 사회적 가치를 중시하는 방향으로 변화될 전 세계적인 패러다임 전환 하에서, ESG는 중소기업의 장기적인 생존과 번영에 직결되는 핵심적인 가치로 자리매김하고 있다. 중소기업은 향후 거래처의 ESG 요구에 대응하기 위해서라도 ESG 경영을 할 수 밖에 없으며, 이미 대부분의 중소기업이 기업 생존 및 거래규모 유지를 위해 ESG 경영이 중요함을 인식하고 있는 상황이다. 이처럼 중소기업에 대한 ESG 경영 요구는 이제 더 이상 선택이 아닌 필수적 과제로 부각되고 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 이러한 ESG요구에 대한 중소기업의 대응 현황을 진단해 보고, 국내 사례를 검토해 봄으로써 중소기업의 향후 과제를 도출함과 동시에 대응전략 구축을 위해 필요한 시사점을 도출하는 데에 목적을 두고자 한다. 이를 통해, 중소기업 ESG경영 필요성과 중소기업의 ESG경영 당면과제, 그리고 과제 해결을 위한 지원정책 및 전략방향 등을 살펴보고자 한다.
Abstract
ESG is a combination of the words environment, society, and governance, but the hidden keywords are corporate sustainability, corporate value, and non-financial performance indicators. In the past, corporate value has been mainly evaluated by quantitative indicators such as financial statements, but the importance of non-financial values such as ESG has recently increased as the global climate change crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic have gone through. As the term 'sustainability', which is closely related to ESG, means, ESG can be said to be a factor that has a mid- to long-term impact on corporate value. Under the global paradigm shift to emphasize environmental and social values, ESG is establishing itself as a core value directly related to the long-term survival and prosperity of SMEs. SMEs have no choice but to engage in ESG management in order to respond to future ESG demands from their customers, and most SMEs are already aware of the importance of ESG management for business survival and maintenance of trading volume. As such, the demand for ESG management for SMEs is no longer an option, but an essential task. Therefore, this study is aimed at diagnosing the current response status of SMEs to these ESG demands and examining domestic cases to derive future tasks for SMEs and at the same time to derive necessary implications for establishing response strategies. Through this, we will examine need for SME ESG management, the challenges facing ESG management of SMEs, and the support policies and strategic directions for solving the challenges.
