아킬레 카스틸리오니의 제품 분석을 통한 디자인방법론 고찰

독보적인 특색을 가진 이탈리아 디자인은 과거부터 현재에 이르기까지 디자인 분야에 지속적으로 영향을 미치고 있다. 그중에서도 아킬레 카스틸리오니는 60여 년간 조명, 가구, 일상용품 등 160여 점에 이르는 유용하면서도 아름다운 디자인을 남겼다. 카스틸리오니는 디자이너 고유의 스타일을 강조하기 보다는 유용한 기능과 형태에 초점을 맞추었다. 때문에 기존 제품을‘리디자인(Redesign)’하는 것에 거부감을 가지지 않았으며, 기성품을 조합하는 방식의‘레디메이드(Ready-made)’개념을 적용하기도 하였다. 또한 사물의 역할과 기능에 제한을 두지 않고, 무엇이든 디자인 재료로 활용될 수 있다고 믿었던 카스틸리오니는 실험적인 디자인 방법을 적용하여 그만의 특색있는 디자인을 남길 수 있었다. 따라서 본 연구는, 아킬레 카스틸리오니의 디자인 작업을 분석하고, 그가 적용했던 디자인 방법을 도출하여 현재의 디자인 과정에 적용 가능한 디자인 특성을 고찰하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 이에 이 연구에서는 카스틸리오니의 제품 분석을 통해 세 가지 디자인 방법을 도출하였다. 아킬레 카스틸리오니는 주변 사물에 대한 세심한‘관찰’로부터 디자인 모티브를 발견하였으며,‘사물분석’을 통해 이를 분석하고,‘프로토타이핑’을 거쳐 최종 디자인을 완성하였다. 이후 도출된 이 세 가지의 디자인 방법을 세분화하여‘사물분석’은 재료/미학/상호작용,‘관찰’은 사물/자연/행동,‘프로토타이핑’은 단순 프로토타이핑/기능 구현을 위한 프로토타이핑/하드 프로토타이핑으로 분류하여 분석하였다. 이미 존재하는 오브제를 관찰하고 여러 부분을 조합하여 새로운 디자인을 만들어내는 카스틸리오니의‘리디자인’방법은 현재의 신제품 개발에도 여전히 사용되고 있는 디자인 방법으로 카스틸리오니의 디자인 과정과 방법론을 추론하고 분석해 봄으로써 현대 디자이너는 물론 디자인 실무와 교육에도 활용될 수 있을 것이라 기대한다.
Abstract
Italian design with its unique characteristics has had a continuous impact on the design field from the past to the present. Among them, Achille Castiglioni left behind over 160 useful and beautiful designs ranging from lighting, and furniture, to everyday objects over 60 years. Castiglioni focused on functionality and form rather than emphasizing a designer's unique style. Therefore, he did not have an aversion to redesigning existing products and even applied the concept of "ready-made" by combining ready-made items. Castiglioni believed that anything could be used as a design material without limiting the role and function of objects. By applying experimental design methods, he was able to leave his own unique designs. Therefore, this study aims to analyze Achille Castiglioni's design work, extract his applied design methods, and examine design characteristics that can be applied to the current design process. In this study, three design methods were derived through the analysis of Castiglioni's products. He discovered design motives from meticulous "observation" of surrounding objects, analyzed them through "object analysis," and completed the final design through "prototyping." These three design methods were further classified into "material/aesthetics/interaction" for object analysis, "object/nature/behavior" for observation, and "simple prototyping/prototyping for functional implementation/hard prototyping" for prototyping. Castiglioni's "redesign" method of observing existing objects and combining multiple parts to create new designs is still being used in current new product development. By inferring and analyzing Castiglioni's design process and methodology, it is expected that modern designers, as well as design practice and education, can apply his design methods.
