기독대학 설립의 선교적 의미 - 일본의 사례를 중심으로 -

본 연구는 일본의 대학을 사례로 기독대학의 설립과 현황을 조사하고, 이들이 갖는 의미를 선교적 관점에서 고찰하는 데에 목적이 있다. 연구 방법은 미션스쿨을 키워드로 위키 정보에서 1차 자료를 구하고, 각 대학 웹사이트를 통해 조사하였다. 연구의 분석결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 2022년 현재 일본에는 복음화율 1%를 크게 넘어. 전체대학의 10%에 이르는 98개 기독대학(개신교계 65.3%, 가톨릭계 30.6%)이 있다. 이는 일본교계의 소중한 신앙 유산이다. 둘째, 일본 기독대학은 메이지 시기에 창립을 시작하여 2022년 현재까지 108년의 경과연수의 역사를 갖고 있다. 감리교계가 133년, 개혁파 장로교계가 124년, 침례교계가 121년, 성공회계 대학이 110년 등 오랜 역사를 갖고 있다. 일본인에 의한 설립은 28개(28.6%)로 적고, 70개(71.4%)대학이 해외선교사의 헌신을 통해 이루어졌다. 특히 미국 선교사와 초기 선교사들의 헌신과 수고가 컸음을 알 수 있었다. 셋째, 일본의 기독대학은 98개 중 57.1%가 채플을 드리고, 49.0%의 대학이 기독교연구소 또는 종교센터 등을 운영하고 있다. 기독대학 중에 신학과를 개설하고 목회자를 양성하는 대학은 12개이고, 기타 168개의 비정규 신학교에서 신학공부가 이루어지고 있다. 기독대학의 설립이 선교적 관점에서 시사하는 의미는 무엇일까? 본 연구는 추가로 주요 15개 대학의 건학이념을 요약 정리하고, 이들 기독대학을 통해 새롭게 일본의 기독교가 부흥될 것을 기대하고 예측하고 있다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the establishment and management status of Christian universities using Japanese universities as examples, and to review their meanings from a missionary perspective. In terms of the research methodology, primary data were gathered from wiki information using the keyword "Mission School" and examined through each university website. First, as of 2022, there are 98 Christian universities (65.3% Protestant and 30.6% Catholic) in Japan, accounting for 10% of all universities, far exceeding the evangelization rate of 1%. This is the important religious legacy of the Japanese religion. Second, as of 2022, 108 years have passed since the Christian University of Japan's founding, which took place during the Meiji era. The Methodist Church has a long history of 133 years, the Reformed Presbyterian Church has 124 years, the Baptist Church has 121 years, and the Anglican University has 110 years. Through the dedication of foreign missionaries, the Japanese established 28 (28.5%) and 70 (71.4%) universities. Early missionaries and American missionaries in particular showed great dedication and effort. Third, 57.1% of Japan's 98 Christian universities have chapels, and 49.0% of universities run Christian research institutes or religious institutions. Twelve Christian universities have theology departments and pastoral training programs, and a total of 168 other non-regular seminaries offer theology courses. What is the significance of the establishment of a Christian university from a missionary point of view? This study summarizes the founding principles of 15 additional universities, and it predicts and expects a revival of Christianity in Japan through the efforts of these Christian universities.
