요한복음 세족식의 유대 정결법적 의미: 요한복음 13장 세족 담화 속 정결례적 요소 분석

Previous research on footwashing in John 13 has been divided into either symbolic interpretation or sacramental interpretation, both based on the Johannine community hypothesis. However, these two interpretations share common problems: 1) an excessive focus on internal symbolism analysis of the text, and 2) the historical existence of the Johannine community is questionable, making these interpretations weak due to the result of the question of historical credibility. Recently, in New Testament studies, a view has emerged that Jesus did not ignore Jewish purity laws but rather came to uphold and fulfil them. Through this view, attempts to explore the relationship between Jesus' Jewish identity in the Jesus tradition has become more active in New Testament scholarship. This study applies this academic shift to the footwashing pericope and argues that Jewish purity elements, which have been overlooked in previous studies, are present in the footwashing in John's Gospel. In doing so, the study first attempts to derive the contemporary concept of purity from Greco-Roman and Second Temple Jewish literature. Based on this, the study identifies three areas in which Jewish purity elements are present in the foot-washing ceremony in John's Gospel: 1) place, 2) inner(moral) purity, and 3) time. The investigation in this study confirms that the three elements present in the footwashing in John's Gospel reflect the author's unique theological interpretation of Jewish purity concepts. Therefore, this study suggests that John's Gospel presents a new concept of purity which is Christ-centered, through transforming the expression of purity from Jewish purity ideas.
